Toffees Teammates Applaud Idrissa Gueye Following Apology for Keane Incident
The Everton midfielder received a warm ovation from his fellow squad members after issuing an apology for his extraordinary red card during the recent victory at Old Trafford.
Rare Incident in English Football
The midfielder earned the distinction of being the first Premier League player to be sent off for striking a teammate in 17 years when he slapped Michael Keane during the fixture. The Toffees' performance was remarkable as they competed with a man down for 85 minutes, including added time, to secure David Moyes' first win at Old Trafford as a visiting manager in multiple tries.
'I want to apologise first to Michael Keane,' Gueye stated on social media. 'I accept complete responsibility for my actions.'
Dressing Room Response
The Senegalese international did not get an opportunity to converse with Moyes or his teammates at half-time. Afterwards, with the away dressing room buzzing after the 1-0 win, the 36-year-old asked to speak to the entire group and Keane in particular.
- He expressed regret to the defender for striking him across the face
- The intense early confrontation occurred after a misplaced pass in his own penalty area
- Additionally he said sorry to the team for putting them with a difficult challenge
- Gueye's words were warmly received by the players
Potential Consequences
The 36-year-old may yet be punished by the club despite Moyes' admission that he appreciates his players competing with each other. Moyes has a regular disciplinary procedure for dismissals and cautions, including fines, which is expected to be applied in this situation.
Suspension and National Team Commitments
Everton could be without their key player until the January. The Senegalese international will serve a three-match suspension against Newcastle United, AFC Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest but could be called up for Africa Cup of Nations duty by his national team before he becomes eligible to play against Chelsea on 13 December.
'Passions can sometimes overflow,' he added. 'However, there's no excuse for such conduct.'
Rival Perspective
At the same time, Mathijs de Ligt accused his team of lacking urgency in the recent defeat, which ended their winning streak at five games.
- 'The Premier League is not for the weak,' stated the Dutch defender
- 'We lacked that urgency to score goals,'
- 'When facing sides like Everton,' who drop back it's difficult
The Red Devils head to Selhurst Park for Sunday's lunchtime start. 'Our upcoming match is absolutely crucial,' said the defender. 'We have to bounce back from this performance.'
