{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters close call with F1 safety personnel
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson revealed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals darted across the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident occurred on the third circuit when track officials were observed on the track as Lawson was getting back on the race following an premature pit stop to change his broken nose section
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Shortly afterward, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes running across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track safety personnel can be allowed to just dash across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the situation
"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was notified that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the regulatory authority
"In the third rotation, track officials were notified and made ready to enter the track and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy personnel were withdrawn and a safety warning flag was displayed in that area"
"We are still investigating what happened subsequent to that time"
